The Johannes Brahms Gesamtausgabe (JBG) – Johannes Brahms Complete Edition – is located at the Institute of Musicology at Kiel University (CAU). A historical-critical new edition of the complete compositional works of Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) is being developed, which should serve scientific research as well as musical practice.

The JBG is being compiled in conjunction with the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien. There is a cooperation agreement between the JBG and the Brahms-Institut at the Musikhochschule Lübeck, which is also situated in Schleswig-Holstein. The work on the new edition is being coordinated by the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities, represented by the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz, from the budget of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Berlin, the Ministry of Education, Science and Cultural Affairs of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, as well as the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy, which finances a part-time staff position at the Institute for History of Art and Musicology at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (research unit Vienna).

There is a cooperation agreement between the JBG and the Brahms-Institut at the Musikhochschule Lübeck, which is also situated in Schleswig-Holstein. In addition, there is good contact with the Brahms Society Schleswig-Holstein in Heide. An overview of the Brahms institutions in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, can be found here.

The volumes of the complete edition will be published by G. Henle Verlag in Munich. The performance materials and study editions derived from these volumes will partly be published by G. Henle Verlag in Munich, and partly by the publishers Breitkopf & Härtel in Wiesbaden.

The JBG is a member of the Fachgruppe Freie Forschungsinstitute (specialist group of free research institutes) at the German Society for Music Research (GfM).
